Why swaddle your newborn baby?
Baby swaddling is magic!
It's an age-old tradition to wrap an infant in a soft, airy, comfortable fabric (like the Lange XL) to restrict a newborn's movements and reassure him or her. As with Ring Sling babywearing, the sensation of wrapping brings comfort, soothing and security, with a calming, reassuring effect on our little ones. It recreates sensations similar to those experienced in the mother's womb, with asmall, comfortable environment, warmth and closeness, areduction in sudden movements and animitation of prenatal sensations.
Swaddling has many advantages, both for newborns and their parents. Discover them and learn how to use swaddling safely and effectively.
A sense of security
Wrapped in a blanket, the baby regains sensations similar to those experienced in the mother's womb. This warmth and security often reduces crying.
Better sleep
During sleep, a baby may startle as a result of the Moro reflexreflex, which wakes him up and makes him cry, making it difficult for him to return to sleep. Swaddling helps to limit these jolts, promoting a more peaceful sleep for both baby and parents.
Relieving colic
Swaddling can also help reduce colic, thanks to the gentle pressure exerted by the cloth on the baby's tummy. This reduces pain and messy movements.
How to swaddle safely and successfully
To practice swaddling safely, follow these simple steps:
1. Choose the right fabric: Use lightweight, large-size, breathable Lange to avoid overheating.
2. Position the baby correctly: Lay baby on his back, with his shoulders just below the top edge of the blanket, so his airway is always clear. Watch our video explanation.
3. Wrap the baby gently: Start by folding one corner of the blanket over the baby, passing one arm at a time. Make sure the legs can move freely to prevent any risk of hip dysplasia.
4. Don't overtighten: The fabric should be snug enough to hold the baby's arms, but not too tight to guarantee comfort and safety. You should be able to slip your hand between the fabric and his chest.
5. Do not overdress the swaddled newborn.
6. Swaddle your baby only when he's under your supervision.
7. Stop swaddling your child as soon as he can roll over onto his stomach.
