Ein Kind in eine physiologische Babytrage kleiden, wenn die Kälte zurückkehrt

The weather is getting colder, the wind is picking up and the humidity is returning. Winter is here. You don't want to put an end to your sweet walks with baby but you wonder how to protect your child from the cold and what is the best way to cover him without him overheating?

1. Do not overdress the child being carried

It is advisable not to overdress a child being carried, even in cooler seasons, to avoid overheating. Always remember that the baby sling is like an extra layer of clothing for the child, so it is important to adjust the child's (and the wearer's) clothing accordingly. In low temperatures, install the physiological baby carrier under the carrying jacketso that the child benefits directly from the wearer's warmth, and vice versa, promoting mutual body regulation and heat exchange. Children are the best hot water bottles in the world, we will not hide it, nor deprive ourselves of it!

However, never cover the baby's head with your jacket, the child must always have access to fresh air and have its airways clear. It is important to regularly check the child's warmth by touching his extremities, his back, his neck and by checking the color of his skin.

2. Protect the baby's extremities from the cold

When baby is walking against you, remember that, unlike the carrier, the child does not move (or very little). It is therefore important that the parts of the body that are not protected by the baby carrier or your jacket, such as the extremities (head, hands, feet), are protected from low temperatures. Indeed, these parts of the child's body are the most vulnerable, they get cold quickly and easily during cool days. So think about socks, booties, hats and gloves if necessary.

3. Avoid combinations

Winter suits are confusing; they are often too thick for baby carriers and do not allow the child to move around properly and adopt the recommended physiological position. Baby will not be able to put himself correctly in a frog position (buttocks lower than the knees) against you. Moreover, they prevent the thermal exchange between the carrier and the child. It is therefore difficult for the latter to regulate his temperature.

Avoid closed foot suits. There is, indeed, a great risk of compression at the level of the legs induced by the sling which will cause a bad blood circulation. In addition, the pressure exerted under a baby's feet can activate the archaic extension reflex. In response to a plantar pressure stimulation, the child will adopt an extension of his whole body (in opposition to the physiological position) which is therefore to be avoided once installed in a baby sling.

If you are a wetsuit enthusiast, it is advisable to choose a wetsuit adapted to the carrying, flexible, rather fine, in natural fiber and to choose it one size above so that the child is comfortable.

 4. Choose natural materials

Natural materials are very effective against the cold. Whether it is for your child's clothing or the material of your baby carrier, we strongly advise you to favor linen, cotton and wool. Made from natural or animal fibers, these materials help regulate your child's temperature by retaining heat while avoiding excessive sweating thanks to their gentle ventilation. Synthetic materials should not be used for babywearing.

5. Pay attention to your child's signs

Finally, check the baby regularly (even if he is sleeping and looks fine). Always be aware of his behavior, gestures, signs and skin color. Trust your feelings and instincts. When in doubt, go to a warm place and take the child out of the baby carrier. A coffee break is never too much!
