Portage, sun and heat
It's a warm, sunny day, and you'd like to go for a walk with your child ☀️ It's possible with a Ring Sling! There's no reason why you shouldn't wear your child in a Joli Nous baby carrier when it's hot, butthere are a few essential safety rules to follow (in addition to the usual precautions):
1. Dress your child lightly
The fabric of the Ring Sling in the child's back is equivalent to a layer of clothing. You must therefore adapt your outfit accordingly. When it is hot, choose a comfortable bodysuit with short sleeves. Choose, for example, a light cotton model that will absorb moisture. Avoid synthetic materials as they may be uncomfortable for the child. The wearer should also wear clothes made of natural materials that are comfortable, airy and light.
2. The "skin to skin" when it is very hot
During hot weather, whether we are carrying or not, we will be hot anyway. But nature is very well made: the wearer's body acts as a thermal regulator. In a "skin-to-skin" carry, the wearer uses his own body temperature to regulate the baby's temperature. If the child is too hot, the wearer's sweat cools him/her, and if he/she is too cold, the wearer warms him/her. It's magic, isn't it? So don't hesitate to wear your baby naked against you when it is very hot. The "skin to skin" between the child and the parent is optimal for the natural thermal regulation (see below).
3. Make sure the child's airway is always clear
This general rule of thumb for babywearing becomes even more important in warm weather. Regularly make sure that your child's airways are clear (and completely outside the fabric of the carrier).
4. Protect your child's head well
Opt for a fabric hat with a wide brim to protect your child's head. Also opt for a pair of sunglasses, if he is cooperative ;-)
5. Choose the coolest time of the day
If possible, avoid going for a walk in a Ring Sling at the sunniest and hottest times of the day. Stay in the shade and cool as much as possible during hot weather.
A little tip that is too practical: the parasol. We don't always think about it, but it's so practical to protect yourself and your child under an umbrella when the weather is nice.
6. Hydrate your child regularly
Even if he doesn't clamor, offer him a drink regularly to compensate for the water loss due to sweating.
7. Apply sunscreen
It is strongly recommended that sunscreen be applied regularly to the child's bare body parts.
8. Choose baby carriers made of natural materials such as linen
Linen is very resistant, hypoallergenic, thermoregulatory, breathable and brings freshness thanks to its capacity to absorb humidity.
